Oahu Pictures - Waimea Beach
Oahu Pictures - Waimea Beach - Heading south from Sunset Beach along Kamehameha Hwy, towards Haleiwa, you’ll pass by one of Oahu’s most enjoyed environments. Waimea Bay is a treasure trove of activities and excitement. The beach is laden with soft white sand burrowed at the foot of the Waimea Valley. The waves here in the winter time can reach 50 feet or more. It’s no wonder Waimea Beach is the home of the “Quicksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave International”.
This surfing event has only been held seven times since 1986 because conditions have to be just right, meaning BIG! The Wiamea River flows into the bay at the north end of the beach. When the river’s current is flowing strong you can watch the surfers having a blast in the waves created by the river impacting the sand bar at the beach’s edge. There is also “Jump Rock” where cliff jumping enthusiasts can leap into Waimea Bay. Waimea Falls Park is located across the road and is open daily from 10 to 5:30 pm. Cost of admission is $19.95 for adults/ $9.95 for children 6-12. The falls are a short three quarter mile distance from the entrance.
