Maui Pictures - Haleakala Park - Haleakala means 'House of the Sun' in Hawaiian and is home to Haleakala Crater, an inactive, but not currently erupting volcano. Maui's highest peak, it rises over 10,000 feet above sea level. Haleakala's graceful slopes can be seen from just about any point on the island. You'll have a great Wilderness Experience if you plan ahead. You may choose to spend a few hours enjoying the solitude and open space on a day hike, a horseback ride inside the volcano, or you may want to plan an overnight backpack trip. Weather conditions can vary dramatically and change quickly so come prepared.
