Maui Beaches & Beach Parks (2 of 4)

Maui has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, all of which are accessible to the public. Beaches account for more than 32 miles of Maui's 150-mile coastline.

EAST MAUI BEACHES

Waianapanapa (Black Sand) Beach - This park is on the way to Hana, right on the ocean. An ancient heiau (sacred outdoor arrangement of stones) and burial sites are near. Many hikes, excellent swimming, black sand beaches, and freshwater caves offer the visitor much to do. The natural beauty of the area is magnificent and quite unforgettable. Old, somewhat dilapidated cabins can be rented with a permit for under $30 per night. Early reservations are recommended. The tent camping area supports a limited amount of people and often fills up weeks in advance. Hana Highway, near Mile Marker 32, Hana, Telephone: (808) 984-8109. Cost: Free.

Hana Beach - This cove is protected from the heavy eastern surf and it offers some decent snorkeling as long as you stay close to shore and avoid the strong outer currents. Hana Beach is popular with residents, but the hardpacked and dark brown sand is not as inviting as nearby beaches found throughout Hana.

Kaihalulu (Red Sand) Beach - One the most visually stunning beaches on the island, this rare red sand beach is one of the most relaxing places in Maui. The difficulties in finding and reaching this beach keeps the population down and allows nudity. A jagged offshore rock wall creates a small swimming area perfect for casual swimming and snorkeling.

Hamoa Beach - Although affiliated with the Hana Hotel, this crescent of black and gold sand backed by a grass area, palm trees, and cliffs has and most of its amenities open to the public. Surrounded by black volcanic rock and in the midst of tropical splendour, Hamoa is a must for visitors and residents alike. The surf is often quite high so be very cautious and aware of dangerous conditions.
