Luana Hills Golf Course
Golf in the Shadow of Olomana Magic Mountain,
perhaps the most beautiful golf course on Oahu, Luana Hills is a one-of-a-kind creation, sculpted by Pete/Perry Dye Design in 1993. It is conveniently situated only 20 minutes from Honolulu in the Koolau Mountains.
From front nine to back nine you journey through wide open spaces on hillsides below the magic mountain of Olomana, to dense tropical jungle that showcases Hawaiian flora and birds. Luana Hills measures just 6,595 yards from the back tees, but its relatively modest length belies the challenge that lies ahead.
This Is a One-of-a-Kind
Pete & Perry Dye Design
Located in the back of beautiful Maunawili Valley on the windward side of Oahu, Luana Hills Country Club is the first course in Hawaii designed by Perry Dye and his famous brother, Pete - one of the most accomplished golf architects in America.
The Dye brothers made sure to incorporate many of their trademark design features, including a variety of forced carries off the tee, bunkers bordered by railroad ties, par-3's over water to island greens, and fairways that fall off steeply into bunkers and ravines. Luana Hills is set in awesome natural surroundings beneath the deep green folds of the Koolau Mountains.
The front nine plays across the lower slopes of Mount Olomana, while the back nine wends its way through a tropical rainforest with dramatic changes in elevation. Local residences refer to it as "Jurassic Park" because there are few signs of civilization, only the surrounding forest and the mountain peaks overhead.

This time I did sign up more than 24 hours in advance, but I got back to my hotel the night before the activity only to discover that she had not signed me up yet because she did not know my hotel room number. Thus, once again, I was forced to call her up at 7 am to arrange for the fax to be sent to my hotel before my activity. This meant that I could not leave until 8 for a 9am tee time on the other side of the island (which turned out to be an 8:50 am tee time when I got there, another unpleasant surprise). I literally hopped into my cart just as the group I was paired with left the first tee, and thus was not able to play the first hole (and of course had no time to warm up). At least I did get the tee time and was able to play, but a little less stress would have made it much more fun.
