The Wailua River is the only navigable river in Hawaii. The Wailua area itself was once royal grounds in the olden days, and boat operators will share their fascinating stories while family members entertain guests with Hawaiian songs. The destination of the cruise is the famous Fern Grotto, a lava rock grotto covered with tropical ferns. At the grotto, you will be serenaded by Hawaiian musicians playing traditional, local songs. In this beautiful, tropical jungle setting, nature has formed a natural amphitheatre with acoustics that are remarkable.

Let people know there is a free shuttle to Smiths Marina (where the river cruise leaves from)at the shopping area. All you have to do is call them and they will come and get you and take you back. The shuttle driver was GREAT!

The stories given by the tour guide on the way to the fern grotto were excellent. The river area is full of intriguing historical stories. The boat ride back was fun as well watching the hula dancer and the musicians entertain us was great.
